The beauty of
An awkward moment
Is that you don’t know
When it will happen
But you’ll remember it
For the rest of your life
That’s probably why

Poem 344

I’m not the first one
To be this way
There must’ve been
A long forgotten ancestor
An awkward tío or tía
A two left feet primo
A quirky abuela
Who was the odd one
In their day

Their spirit lives in me
Their music is in me
Their ballads are in my blood
The formula for how they resisted
Is in me

Along with the schematics
For how to raise a family
In a house made of mud
How to harmonize heartbeats
When you give
Los sobrinos a hug
How to use prayer
and home remedies
To ward off demons
Bad friends
And stomach bugs

I am their living history
Living right now
And I will not bury those
Undesirable qualities
That make me walk this Earth
Like a big fat giant purple cow
No, I will not hide who I am

In fact, I am the Ox
With one broken horn
And a blind milky eye
And dirt road shorn hooves
But I have the biggest back
And the most powerful legs
Because I am the spirit
of everyone who came before me on the move

I am the wounded healer
And I carry my ancestors legacy
In everything I do
And everywhere I go
And that is the greatest honor
And the most humbling burden
But I am my generation’s doctor
And it’s up to me
To take care of my village
